Universe (HIIT)
Universe is a 45 minute functional fitness class integrated with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) components. It will improve cardiovascular health, mobility, and strength.
Universe is ALIVE's HIIT class: 45 minutes of functional strength training with rounds of high-intensity intervals, practiced at 85°F and 50% humidity. The base of the class is strength work with medium dumbbells and bands; the interval rounds push your heart rate into ranges steady-state exercise rarely visits, then hand it back just long enough to go again. Cardiovascular health, endurance, mobility, and muscle definition in one session. The focus leans lower body, but you work everything before it's done.
High-Intensity Interval Training earns its reputation through the recovery, not just the work. Short, hard efforts followed by brief rests let you accumulate more time at high intensity than you could sustain continuously, and that repeated cycle is the stimulus that improves cardiovascular capacity fastest. Universe layers those rounds onto functional strength movements, the squats, hinges, pushes, and carries of the fundamental patterns, so the loaded work builds definition while the intervals build the engine. The 85°F room raises the demand of both; expect your best sweat of the week.
Is Universe Too Intense for Beginners?
Intense, yes. Inaccessible, no. The class is great for all levels because the scaling is endless: your weight choice, your squat depth, your pace inside each interval, your rest position when you need one. "High intensity" means high for you, which is how the format is meant to work. Newer members typically spend their first few classes finding a sustainable effort level, and the fitness arrives quickly from there. If you'd rather build a base first, Subatomic trains the same functional patterns at a steadier pace.
Who Universe Is For
- Conditioning-first goals. If cardiovascular fitness is the target, intervals are the most efficient tool in the building.
- The time-crunched. 45 minutes of interval work does what much longer steady sessions can't. Density is the whole point.
- Athletes keeping an edge. The push-recover pattern mirrors how most sports actually demand effort.
- Members whose progress stalled. If your routine has gone comfortable, intervals reset it; being newly bad at something is where the gains are.
What to Expect
Moisture-wicking clothes and a full water bottle. Mat, towel, and the dumbbells and bands are all provided. Expect strength blocks punctuated by clearly-cued interval rounds, compound movements you can scale on the fly, and the immersive visuals and sound helping you through when the intervals get hard. Pace the first rounds conservatively; the class compounds, and you'll walk out feeling strong and accomplished.
How Often
Two to three sessions a week with real recovery between them. High intensity earns its results partly by not being an everyday tool. Many members run Universe once or twice weekly and fill the gaps with lower-intensity classes: Spark, Gravity, or a flow class to move on the easy days.
Where to Practice
Universe is offered at our Plano, Southlake, and Las Colinas locations.
